Tight Clash with Old Rivals Ends in Upset

Sunday at Davies Park saw the Magpies take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the highly anticipated second instalment of the Mitch Cronin Cup - a special match honouring the legacy of Mitch Cronin, a beloved player who tragically passed away in 2020. Since 2021, the fixture has served as a tribute to Mitch’s impact on both clubs and the wider Rugby League community.

The game was a tough and physical contest from the outset, with both teams locked in an arm wrestle for possession. The first half remained tight, with Wynnum holding a narrow 11-8 lead heading into the break.

The second half continued to be a hard-fought battle for possession, but costly errors began to creep into the Magpies' game. Broncos’ stars Selwyn Cobbo and Jaiyden Hunt capitalised on the momentum, each crossing for tries. The Magpies responded with strong efforts from Tyler Coburn and Mitchell Owen, who both crossed the line to bring the home side back within five points. However, Hunt struck again in the 75th minute, scoring his second try and putting the result beyond doubt as Wynnum sealed the win.

The 2025 result marks the Seagulls' first victory in the Mitch Cronin Cup since the match’s inception, a significant milestone in an emotional and meaningful contest. While the Magpies couldn’t secure the win, the club stood proud in honouring Mitch with a spirited performance and a memorable day at Davies Park.

Hostplus Cup have a bye this weekend providing an opportunity to reflect on Sunday’s performance ahead of their clash with reigning premiers Norths Devils at Bishop Park on June 29th.
