Our Tilermade Hostplus Cup side felt the significance of Sunday's game as they defended the Mitch Cronin Memorial Cup in an impressive 80 minute display.
Building on last weeks close win against the Brisbane Tigers, Souths dazzled with a solid defensive effort in their Round 17 clash against Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
Ethan Quai-Ward opened the scoring with a try in the corner, following a precise pass from Radean Robinson. Sunday marked Quai-Ward's 50th Hostplus Cup appearance, all with the Magpies, and he celebrated the milestone by crossing the line twice.
Quai-Ward scored again in the 13th minute, finding a gap after a well-placed kick from Tristan Sailor. Brandon Finnegan battled the high winds to convert the second try of the day.
Leading 10-0, the boys had found their rhythm on both sides of the ball, holding Wynnum out from the line to head into the sheds with a 22 point lead.
Their defensive efforts continued into the second half, defending their line for three sets before conceding one of two total tries by Wynnum.
With just 6 minutes left of play, Souths Centre Kienan Power-Tempest stole the show with an intercept into a runaway try converted by Finnegan to bring the full time score to 40-10.
