Souths Club Caption, Rory Ferguson gears up to take the field for his 100th Hostplus Cup game this Sunday in front of a home crowd at Davies Park.
Ferguson has been with the club since his debut in Round 21 of the 2018 season against the PNG Hunters. Signed by the Brisbane Broncos while playing Rugby Union in New Zealand, he made the transition to Rugby League out of high school in 2016.
His work rate as a Flanker in Rugby Union meant he was identified as the perfect light middle forward in Rugby League. This is solidified by his career stats in the Hostplus Cup, averaging per game 118 run meters, 44 post contact meters with a 95.6% tackle efficiency.
Ferguson is the fourth player to reach the 100 game milestone for the Magpies after the inception of the Brisbane Broncos in 1988. He joins Phil Dennis, current Assistant Coach Andrew Edwards and Matt McCosker, putting his name alongside a list of Souths' greats. Ferguson's dedication to the Black and White has earned him great respect including from Cameron Booth who preceded Rory as Club Captain.
Booth handed over the Captaincy in 2023 and Rory grabbed the opportunity with both hands becoming a stellar role model for his team mates. His dedication both on and off the field has been unwavering during his time with the club.
CEO Steven Bretherton takes immense pride in Ferguson's achievement. Having served as Hostplus Cup Coach in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Bretherton has had the privilege of witnessing Rory's development and growth into the Captain role.
"It takes a special person to be handed the captaincy of a foundation Rugby League Club, this speaks volumes of the regard that Rory is held within in our club. I can say this on behalf of the Board, Executive Committee and everyone who works in the background at the Magpies.
"Playing 100 games of Hostplus Cup is a rare feat these days, let alone at a single club. We look forward to celebrating this special milestone for Rory and everyone at the Souths Logan Magpies," a proud testimony from the Club CEO.
Bretherton passed on the coaching role to Karmichael Hunt in 2023 giving him the opportunity to continue shaping Rory as a player over the last two seasons.
"Rory is not the biggest body for a middle, but what he lacks in size he makes up for with attitude, work ethic, and a desire to be the best player he can be." Hunt shared when asked what makes Rory the player he is today.
He continued "He's a player that leads with his actions, and is someone that will never shy away from a challenge, no matter the circumstances - this is why he is our captain."
Ferguson is set to celebrate his milestone 100th game in a special way, as it coincides with the final match of the season for Souths. This significant event will unfold in front of our passionate home crowd at Davies Park, adding an extra layer of excitement and pride to an already momentous occasion.
From all of the Club, congratulations Rory.
