Magpies Suffer Close Loss at Piggabeen

Souths Logan Magpies went head-to-head with the Tweed Seagulls on Sunday, July 13, at the Seagulls Sporting Complex in Round 17 of the Hostplus Cup. In a fast-paced and high-scoring affair, the Magpies fell just short, with the Seagulls edging them out 36-32 in a game that went down to the wire.

The Magpies struck early, with Floyd Aubrey breaking through the line to open the scoring, converted neatly by Latrell Siegwalt. Momentum then swung Tweed’s way as they ran in three unanswered tries, forcing the Magpies to dig deep.

Israel Leota sparked the comeback with a determined effort in the corner, followed soon after by Anthony Milford, who burst through three defenders to narrow the margin. A late first-half try to the Seagulls saw them head into the break with a 24-18 advantage.

The second half mirrored the intensity of the first, with both teams trading tries and defensive pressure rising. The Magpies continued to create chances and refused to let up, staying in the contest until the final minutes. Despite the fightback, the Seagulls held firm, claiming the win by just four points.

It was another narrow loss for the Magpies - their second in as many weeks - underlining areas for refinement heading into the crucial final rounds. With plenty of positives to build on, Souths Logan will turn their attention to Round 18, where they’ll face the Redcliffe Dolphins this Saturday at Kayo Stadium, kicking off at 5:00pm.
