The Magpies made a statement at Bishop Park on Sunday, defeating the reigning premiers on their home turf to kick off XXXX Rivalry Round with a bang.
It was a dream start for Souths Logan, with skipper Rory Ferguson crossing just two minutes into the contest. The successful conversion gave the Magpies an early 6-point lead heading into what would be a big 40 minutes of footy.
The first half quickly became a grind, with both teams locked in an arm wrestle for possession and field position. The Devils eventually broke through with back-to-back tries, edging ahead and shifting the momentum their way.
But the Magpies hit back in style. A dropped ball from Devil’s Lachlan Lewis opened the door, and centre Kienan Tempest took full advantage with a strong run, setting up Floyd Aubrey to finish and swing the lead back in Souths Logan’s favour just before halftime settling the score at 10-14.
The second half opened with more back-and-forth footy as both teams looked to gain the upper hand. It wasn’t until a perfectly executed scrum play that Souths broke through - Phranklyn Mano-Le-Mamea bursting away to score a spectacular try.
Building on that momentum, the Magpies extended their lead in the 60th minute when Tyler Coburn charged straight through the Devils' defensive line, adding another four-pointer to secure the win with a final score of 24-12.
Our next match is a home game this Sunday at Davies Park against the Brisbane Tigers, kicking off at 2:00pm. Don’t miss it!
