This year, Souths are excited to introduce the inaugural SLM John Grant Education Award, recognising a player who exemplifies leadership and excellence both on and off the field, particularly in the areas of wellbeing and education.
John represented Southern Suburbs Magpies from 1968 to 1979, beginning in the Under 18s and Under 20s before making his mark in First Grade in 1970. This was at a time when the BRL competition was a dominant force in Brisbane and Queensland Rugby League. Over his career, John played 210 first grade games for Souths and an additional 20 to 30 matches for various representative teams, including Brisbane, Southeast Queensland, and Queensland. His career pinnacle came with his selection as a Kangaroo for the 1972 World Cup in France, followed by a season with Warrington in the English Rugby League.
The club is very proud to honour John's extensive career and his commitment to Souths. Below is a video of John announcing the inaugural winner of the John Grant Education Award in 2024.
