The Magpies claimed a hard-fought victory over the Capras in Sunday’s Anzac Round clash at Davies Park, following a gritty battle.
Souths were privileged to host the Anzac Round clash and pay respects to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps with a respectful ceremony preceding the game.
This round holds deep significance for the Magpies, as it provides an opportunity to honour the memory of beloved club and board member, Corporal David Garratt. Each year, the Magpies’ Anzac jersey is designed in his honour to ensure his legacy lives on.
Joined by Returned Serviceman Ben Millmann who led the team out alongside Dave’s son Alexander, St Laurence’s College Student Xavier to perform The Last Post, and Selina Semu to sing the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems. The stage was set for an explosive game of Rugby League.
The game got off to a brutal start, with Capras’ Tyler Szepanowski taken off for a HIA just four minutes in, after sustaining a split eyebrow from a high tackle on Magpies’ Byron Johnson.
Quick hands from Magpies’ centre Kienan Tempest saw Israel Leota cross for his first of three tries for the day. This saw the beginning of a Magpies rampage drawing out their lead to 22-0 heading into half time.
The Capras opened their account early in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to halt the Magpies’ momentum. Floyd Aubrey extended the lead, getting across the line in the corner after a lightning-fast cut-out pass from fullback Latrell Siegwalt.
Siegwalt crossed for his own try in the last ten minutes of play, running straight through an exhausted Capras defensive line. Successfully converted by Coby Black brining the final score to 32-12.
The much needed win for the Magpies saw Head Coach Karmichael Hunt feeling relieved when asked about it post-game. His comments were “It was pleasing to get the two points after a tough month of footy for us. We’re really looking forward to building our season further once we return from our bye.”
After a week off, the Magpies will face the Western Clydesdales at Davies Park on May 11 in a round one make-up game as a result of TC Alfred at the beginning of the Hostplus Cup season.
