Sunday’s game against the Redcliffe Dolphins at Davies Park saw the beginning of the Hostplus Cup season for the Magpies.
Whilst the score line was not in the Magpies favour, the game highlighted key areas of strength and weakness to work on before meeting the reigning premiers at Marsden State High School this Saturday.
The first half saw Dolphins cross the line in 3 unanswered tries in the first 20 minutes of the game highlighting holes in the Magpies defence. It was clear the team lacked energy giving the 2024 grand finalists an edge.
Senior players Rory Ferguson and Tyson Smoothy stood out among the team as constants in both attack and defence. Smoothy topped the tackle count with 35 total and Ferguson made 2 line breaks and scored the Magpies first try of the day.
Head Coach Karmichael Hunt felt the performance didn’t reflect the effort from the boys in the pre-season. He commented “We were all very disappointed by our performance on the weekend. We lacked commitment in all facets of our game, and our attitudes were nowhere near where they need to be.”
Heading into this weekend’s clash with Norths Devils at home, Hunt has placed an emphasis on effort and attitude in his sessions.
Get down to Marsden State High School this Saturday at 6:00pm to support the boys.
