Saturday’s encounter at UAA Park saw the Magpies take on the Burleigh Bears in a hard-fought contest, with wet conditions adding another layer of difficulty for both sides.
The Magpies opened the scoring early, with Kienan Power-Tempest crossing the line off a well-placed kick from Anthony Milford. Latrell Siegwalt added the extras, giving us an early 6-point lead.
Burleigh responded in the 27th minute, capitalising on a break down the right edge that allowed fullback Lachlan West to find the try line and level the contest.
A late penalty goal before the break saw the Magpies edge ahead, taking a narrow 8-6 lead into halftime.
It was a game of halves, with Burleigh surging into the lead in the final 40 minutes. The home side amassed another 15 points to secure a victory. Magpies score was halted at 8 points making the final score 21-8.
Souths Hostplus Cup Coach Karmichael Hunt felt disappointed about the weekend’s performance. He stated “Another disappointing result on the weekend, we’re making a habit of hurting ourselves which is concerning. I’m looking forward to seeing how the group respond this week in Cairns.”
