A dominant 56-point victory has catapulted the Souths Logan Magpies into the Hostplus Cup top eight, with Ezra Mam’s impressive return to rugby league taking centre stage.
Sunday’s clash at Davies Park served as a rescheduled Round 1 fixture, postponed earlier in the season due to the TC Alfred weather event. Despite scattered showers creating slippery and muddy conditions, the Magpies delivered a clinical performance against the Western Clydesdales.
It was a shaky start for the home side, with Clydesdales fullback Kaden Buhse slicing through the Magpies' defence to score in just the fourth minute. However, the early setback only seemed to fuel Souths Logan’s intensity as they quickly took control of the contest.
The Magpies’ scoring spree began with Israel Leota, who capitalised on a sharp line break and a cutout pass from five-eighth Anthony Milford to cross.
Returning Bronco Ezra Mam made his mark soon after, crossing for a try of his own in the 28th minute. Mam was electric throughout the match, notching up three try assists and eight tackle breaks in a commanding performance that earned him player of the match.
The Magpies extended their lead further in the second half, with the Clydesdales managing their second and final try before Souths responded with two late tries to close out the match solidifying their 66-10 victory.
Hostplus Cup Coach Karmichael Hunt was pleased with the effort from the boys on Sunday but said he has his eyes on the upcoming match with the Blackhawks. “Toowoomba have always been a tough matchup for us in the past, so to finish with a result like that on Sunday was pleasing. We need to quickly move on from that game however, as the Blackhawks pose a completely different challenge,” Hunt said.
The Blackhawks currently sit second on the ladder following a narrow victory over the Ipswich Jets. Just two points behind the reigning premiers, the Blackhawks will be determined to claim another valuable two points this Sunday.
Get down to Davies Park this Sunday at 2:00pm to see the two sides clash.
