Round 22 | Coach’s Review

The weekend saw us travel up to Rockhampton to take on the CQ Capras in what was a must win game for us. The final score saw us win 24-22 which I don’t believe was a true reflection of our effort or dominance on the night.

Missing 6 regulars including our 1, 7, 6 and 9, it was always going to be a tough road trip. We debuted 18 year old Derek Stowers at fullback, Ben Jackson had his first start for the year at half, Leon Panapa who’s played Back row all year filled in at five eighth and Jack Walters who’s only played a handful of Intrust Super Cup games got the start at 9. As a result we were always going to be disjointed with our attack and it was always going to be a game where we needed to be patient and defend well.

After last week’s disappointing defensive effort, I was really happy with the intent and effort we showed in defence, with 2 of CQ’s tries coming against the run of play.

With results going our way over the weekend, we now sit only 2 points behind Easts, who are in fifth and one point behind Sunshine Coast who with the bye remain in 6th. With the bye this week and the guaranteed 2 points, we could possibly see ourselves go equal with Easts on 26 points and 1 point ahead of Sunshine Coast at the completion of this round, if results go our way.

The bye couldn’t have come at a better time for us this week. It gives everyone a much needed rest, and it’s looking very likely that we will have a number of key players back from injury for the game against Mackay, the week after the bye, which will be huge. Like any of the teams who remain in finals contention, you need your best players on the park to give yourself the best chance of playing finals football, and thankfully it looks like that will be the case for us for our remaining 2 games.
