Round 18 Review
The Weekend saw us take on traditional rival Wynnum Seagulls.
With plenty to play for, on both sides, the game was willing from the opening whistle. To Wynnum’s credit, they were more clinical and executed a lot better than we did in the first half and took a well-deserved 18-4 lead into halftime. Wynnum again started the second half the better and when they scored to push the score out to 24-4 it was looking like it was going to be a long afternoon. To our guys’ credit, we finally found some energy and started executing our plays with more purpose. We clawed our way back to within 4 points at 24-20 with 15 minutes to play. In a see sawing last 15 minutes Wynnum were able to steady and go on to record a 36-26 victory.
I couldn’t fault our player’s effort all afternoon but it was probably our dumbest performance for a long time. We were too 1 out in yardage and we weren’t finding our spots in good ball and on the back of all of this, our tackle 5 execution was terrible also. It was the players fight that kept them in the contest right until the very end, but moving forward, we will need to make sure we play a lot smarter and get back to what’s been working for us.
The day was also a celebration of Phil Dennis and his standing within the game. Phil moved into 5th position of all time, for games played in the Intrust Super Cup. It’s a hell of an achievement and testament to his durability. With Phil playing some of the best football of his career this year, it’s fair to assume there’s plenty more games left in the legend yet.
