Time To Execute For Young Broncos

THE Broncos have been told in no uncertain terms where they need to improve when they face Souths Logan Magpies in a trial in Brisbane this Saturday night.

With the main squad away in England for the World Club Series, a second-tier team took apart Wynnum Seagulls 20-0 last Friday.

Led by forwards Salesi Funaki and Joe Boyce, the Broncos put on a steely defensive performance against the Seagulls to keep their goal line intact.

But the match was nil-all for a long period after the Broncos made some silly errors with the ball.

That will be the focus for this group, who are trying to prove they deserve a shot at the top grade.

“If you want to play at the next level, you have to get rid of silly mistakes,” said Kurt Richards, who is in charge with the senior coaching staff in England.

“We are talking about things like errors in the play the ball and contact, and lazy catch and pass.

“To impress this week we need the same defensive effort as the last game, but with much better execution in attack.”

Winger Elijah Alick will make a long-awaited return to the field from a knee reconstruction, while Alex Barr shifts from the centres to his favoured position of second row.

Barr will pack down alongside Brett Greinke, while off-season recruit from the Tigers, Marion Seve, moves into the centres.

The match will start at 6pm at Davies Park, with the under 20s to kick off in a trial against the Titans at 4pm.

Trial Games / Refs February 19-21

Early risers will no doubt be tuning in to watch the World Club Series being played in the UK this weekend – but closer to home, there is plenty of football to keep fans entertained.

The Souths Logan Magpies will take on their affiliated NRL club the Brisbane Broncos at Davies Park on Saturday, while down south, the Ipswich Jets will travel to Pittwater Park to play the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

Unfortunately – Manly recruit Matt Parcell has a hamstring injury and won’t face his old team-mates – but told QRL TV he is settling in well at his new club.

Fans who attend Burleigh’s Pizzey Park on Saturday will be treated to three good games, with the Bears playing the Sunshine Coast Falcons in both the FOGS Colts Challenge and Intrust Super Cup – before the Titans take on the Rabbitohs at 5pm.

Canberra Raiders Players Rejoin the Magpies

Souths Logan Magpies juniors Cameron Booth and Johnathan Kent rejoin club from Canberra Raiders

SOUTHS Logan Magpies recruits Cameron Booth and Jonathan Kent are looking to put injury behind them as they return to their childhood club.

Close mates Booth and Kent have both spent the past two years in the Canberra Raiders’ under-20s system, but they each spent time on the sidelines.

“I did my knee in the first year we were there and then he did his knee last year,” Booth said.

“Mine is doing really well, I played over 20 games last year.

“Johno is back into contact so he’s recovering well, too.

“I think the biggest thing I learnt at the Raiders was just about professionalism, in terms of eating right and preparing well.”
