A Word from CEO Jim McClelland

The week that was…

Sundays interstate clash confirmed our club coaching stocks are in good hands with the Jon Buchanan Queensland Residents team demolishing the NSW side at Langlands Park.  Jon did a tremendous job with the side, as we knew he would.  George Fai and Joe Boyce are to be commended for their significant physical roles alongside Magpies teammate Scott Doyle, who added to his performance, with a stellar kicking game.

It was unfortunate to see our Mal Meninga side beaten after a very strong season, however full credit to the Western Mustangs, who were too good for our boys on the day. This was déjà vu for a number of our juniors who suffered the same fate in the U16s competition in 2016.  It is of course a tremendous effort by our young Magpies, supported by Lane and his coaching staff, in reaching yet another State final. I’d like to acknowledge the efforts of the family of these young players who drove them to training up to 3 times a week, from November, to ensure they made every training session. Your support is crucial and certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.

This week we take on the Townsville Blackhawks – our first real road trip of the year – and we know it will be a tough assignment against a solid outfit.  I’m sure the team will be up to the challenge. I know they are keen to make amends for the loss to Redcliffe last week.

Leagues Club Update

Last week saw continued progress with the back patio re-development, which is being undertaken through our Work for the Dole project. We are very hopeful of having a new awning and sails up by the end of May.  On completion the upgrade will link the front courtyard with the existing back patio, offering the locals a great destination to enjoy a bite and a cool beer. Recent updates suggest the additional applications for works in the front courtyard should be given the green-light during the same period.
