Magpies get win over Cutters in ‘rollercoaster’ game

QRL Media

Souths Logan Magpies beat Mackay Cutters 22-20 in Mackay tonight, despite Cutters scoring the first three tries.

Cutters played their hearts out, but it wasn’t enough.

Cutters’ Jayden Hodges was first to cross the try line three minutes into the game; followed by Cooper Bambling at the 11-minute mark and Reuben Cotter at 28 minutes.

Magpies coach Jon Buchanan said “it was a rollercoaster”.

“I’m happy to get away with that win,” Buchanan said.

“It was a bit ugly at times.”

Buchanan said there was not much football for the Magpies during the first 25 minutes, “just a lot of defence”; he said his team showed “good qualities” to get back to 14-12 at half time.

Magpies, motivated to perform after losing to Central Queensland Capras in Round 1, were buoyed by the inclusions of Tanah Boyd, Sam Tagataese and Patrick Mago.

The first to cross the try line for Magpies was Gerome Burns at 35 minutes, followed by Matthew Soper-Lawler at 38 minutes.

Magpies’ Manaia Cherrington crossed the try line at 53 minutes and Scott Doyle at 60 minutes, before Cutters’ Emry Pere got four points at the 70-minute mark.

Buchanan said he was most impressed by Cherrington and veteran Phil Dennis, off the bench.

Cutters’ Marcus Jensen converted two of the Cutters’ four tries, and Boyd converted three of the Magpies’ four.

Cutters, with Paul Byrnes at fullback in place of the injured Carlin Anderson, did not ease up until the final whistle, but it was not enough to get the two points.

Cutters have now only won one of the two teams’ 12 past clashes; and only one of their past 10 home games.

Magpies will face the Norths Devils in the XXXX Rivalry Round next week.

Buchanan said facing a team after a loss was always hard, so Magpies would have to play well to beat Norths, who “have a good roster”.

Cutters will take on the Central Queensland Capras next week.
