Dan Russell said he and his family were surprised when he got the call up to join the NGCB PNG PM’s XIII side for the October 6th Test Match

“I was surprised actually but very honoured. My family hasn’t been here in a long period of time so brining back the family is a good feeling, they are very honored and I’m keen to get out there and do my best,” he said.

Dan added “my father and uncle will fly in on Friday and they’ll get to see me play so it will be a good experience and I’m very excited.”

Dan’s grandparents lived in PNG for over 15 years in the 1960s and 1970s.

His grandfather was a patrol officer in the Sepik region, and later became a medical teacher in Port Moresby, Madang and Kainantu, where his grandmother also worked as a nurse.

Dan’s father, Mark was born in Port Moresby and grew up in Madang until the age of 16.

Dan previously turned out for a Queensland PNG side and now has made his way into the senior squad.

The Souths Logan Magpies fullback said the squad has been very welcoming and he looking forward to the test Match.

“The boys have been great, very welcoming. It’s like I’ve been their for years. they’re very good, easy to get a long with, its making my time a lot easier. They are a very good bunch of blokes so it makes it a lot easier for me.

“It will be a good test, it’s a good side. So we’ve got to train hard like we’ve been doing all week we will compete well with that side. Couple of players like Corey Allen the fullback, it’ll be good to play against (him) so I’m looking forward to it,’ he said.
